ORLANDO, Fla., Dec. 22, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — More than 110 million Americans plan to hit the roads this holiday weekend and are at risk (both by land and air) is expected to be Roads as far north as the Upper Peninsula, Michigan (I-75) and as far west as Seattle, Washington and Portland, Oregon (I-5) were hit by severe weather over the busy New Year weekend and interstates Many are equipped. Midwest (including I-70, I-80, I-90, I-96, I-94).

1

Conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly on Friday, December 23 at 6:00 PM ET as an Arctic cold air mass fuels a powerful cold front. Meanwhile, in the Pacific Northwest, overland currents from the Gulf of Alaska push in a mixture of snow and winter (with a period of freezing rain through Friday morning).

Most major interstate highways (and their highways) in the Midwest are subject to a mixture of snow and winter. This includes I-70, I-80, I-90, I-96, I-94, and even his I-75 near the Canadian border north of Mackinac Island.

2

Aided by the relative warmth of the Great Lakes, snowfall can exceed an inch per hour, especially on Interstate 94 near Lansing, Michigan and Detroit. For roads that are already snow-covered (and gusts of wind as the front moves east), a near-whiteout condition can occur if the gusts increase as the front moves east.

Just hours later, at 8:00 PM on Friday, another significant area will unfold that will affect Michigan. In addition to snow, icy roads are expected along Interstate 69 from Sarnia to Flint, Michigan. This includes a portion of US Route 23 south of Flint. This time of year, ice conditions continue south along I-94 towards Detroit.

Frigid temperatures and snow on the ground have caused icing problems and flights to and from many regional airports, including Chicago O’Hare (ORD), Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW), John Glenn International Airport (CMH), and Cleveland Hopkins. can also cause delays in International Airport (CLE).

Four

Parts of Pennsylvania and New Jersey, just east of Michigan, also seem set to their own perilous travel conditions.

At 6 p.m. ET on Friday, icy roads will follow the Pennsylvania Turnpike and U.S. Route 202 north from Philadelphia toward Norristown and Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Ice conditions are also widespread along portions of State Route 31 and Route 202 in central New Jersey and near the Interstate 78 and Route 22 interchange east of Clinton, New Jersey.

A few inches of snow are expected just before this time, but with temperatures near freezing, the roads are expected to remain quite problematic late into the night.

Conditions will improve on Saturday, but icy conditions appear to persist in parts of northeastern Pennsylvania, extending from the Poconos north and west of Scranton/Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, to the Pennsylvania/New York border. This is due to the dense, frigid air that sinks into the mountainous valleys.

Air travelers arriving at Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) can also expect road delays from the airport, but the worst road conditions seem to stay outside the subway.
