Major winter storm hampers busiest pre-Christmas travel day at Orlando International Airport

orlando, florida – Millions of Americans’ travel plans are thrown off balance as a massive winter storm hits eastern US states before Christmas.

Friday — set to be Orlando International Airport’s busiest pre-Christmas travel day, with more than 160,000 passengers expected to pass — saw more cancellations than Thursday saw about 80 flights cancelled. was announced overnight.

Already on Friday, we expect to see roughly the same number of cancellations as on Thursday, leaving many flights to and from the OIA to remain in the red. More than 300,000 people hope to enter and leave the airport throughout the weekend.

Passengers described delays as waiting for more than four hours, and one man told News 6 that he was unable to obtain flight compensation due to the weather.

According to the National Weather Service, more than 200 million people (about 60% of the U.S. population) received some form of winter weather advisory or warning on Friday. The Bureau of Meteorology’s map “depicts he one of the largest ranges of winter weather warnings and advisories,” the forecaster said in a statement Friday.

We’re facing dozens more cancellations than the day before, and as of this writing we’re already at about 100. Airport officials continue to warn travelers to arrive at least three hours in advance to address congestion, ticketing and security as well as parking issues.
