Washington, D.C., suspended over charges related to the death of a 20-year-old man during a police chase in 2020.

Suspended London Metropolitan Police officer Terrence Sutton, 38, has been found guilty of second-degree murder, conspiracy to obstruct justice and obstruction of justice in the death of Caron Hilton Brown. Suspended Lt. Andrew Zabavski, 54, was found guilty of obstruction of justice conspiracy and obstruction, his release said.

In October 2020, Hilton Brown, 20, was driving a Revel scooter on a sidewalk without a helmet, so police turned on the emergency lights and tried to stop traffic, CNN previously said. It reported, citing the indictment.

It set off a police chase that spanned more than 10 blocks and sometimes accelerated to “more than double the residential speed limit,” the indictment says. Officers drove Hilton Brown into an alley and as he exited the alley, he was hit by an oncoming vehicle, CNN reported.

CNN previously reported that Hylton-Brown suffered a severe head injury and died two days later.

A jury found that Sutton “caused Mr. Hilton Brown’s death by driving a police vehicle with conscious disregard” for his safety, a release said Wednesday. also found that Sutton and Zabavski “conspired” to hide details about the fatal crash from Metropolitan Police Department officials.

In a statement to CNN, Metropolitan Police Commissioner Robert Contee said: We have confidence in our justice system and trust that juries have considered all the facts, deliberated carefully, and reached a fair decision. ”

Contee said police will complete an internal investigation into Hylton-Brown’s death now that all criminal proceedings have been completed.

“Both Sutton and Zabavski have been suspended indefinitely without pay during these proceedings,” Conti added.

Sutton faces up to 40 years in prison for second-degree murder. Sutton and Zabavski face up to 20 years in prison for obstruction of justice and up to five years for conspiracy.

A sentencing date for Sutton and Zabavski has yet to be scheduled, according to a news release.

CNN reached out to Sutton’s attorney, J. Michael Hannon, but did not receive a response. CNN is trying to contact Zabavski’s attorney.
