Democratic Rep. Jamie Ruskin of Maryland announced Wednesday that he has “serious but curable cancer” and will begin outpatient treatment.

“After several days of testing, I was diagnosed with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, a serious but curable cancer,” Raskin said in a statement. Georgetown University Hospital and Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center are about to embark on an outpatient-based chemoimmunotherapy course. In my situation, after four months of treatment, most patients have a good prognosis.”

The Maryland Democrat is a member of the House Select Committee investigating the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol. He’s also the lead impeachment manager for former President Donald Trump’s second impeachment trial in 2021 and was just elected by his peers as the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee.

“I will get through this and in the meantime continue to move forward every day in Congress for American democracy,” Ruskin said in a statement.

“I expect to be able to work through this period, but have been warned by doctors to reduce unnecessary exposure to avoid COVID-19, the flu, and other viruses,” he said.

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma “tends to grow rapidly,” according to the American Cancer Society, and is frequently treated with a cycle of four drugs given three weeks apart. About half of all patients can be cured, but the society points out that much depends on factors such as the stage of the disease.
