Southpoint, Ohio (WSAZ) – Officials at the Facing Hunger Food Bank (FHFB) say food insecurity in Lawrence County is twice the national average.

“This kind of statistic never rests,” said FHFB’s Billy Edwards. “We’re fighting a battle that we feel we can win with the help of our community, so we’re not going to take time off.”

With people gathering at this time of year, many people in the area need help to feed more people.

A line of cars formed in the parking lot of the Fayette Township Fire Station.

“The many people we served last week couldn’t have had their Christmas meal without us,” Edwards said. may not be able to eat dinner without the help of the program.

Organizers say they learned to prepare for the big move out at every stop.

“You get to meet people who say you might be the only one they’re talking to all week,” Edwards said. These people are great.”

If you have extra non-perishable or unopened items and nowhere to put them, or you’re trying to clean up before the new year. There are people who can use that food.

“We have bins set up for food drives throughout the community,” says Edwards. “I’ll take whatever non-perishables you have in excess.”

For every 2.1 pounds of food donated, it can be turned into a meal.
