Travel advisories issued across Michiana amid winter storm

(WNDU) – Several counties here in Michiana have issued travel advisories due to dangerous road conditions brought on by a winter storm that arrived in the area on Thursday.

In Indiana, each county emergency management agency provides county travel status information. As counties initiate official travel advisories and notify the state, they will be automatically updated on the Indiana Department of Homeland Security website.

county yellow is under advisory, which is the lowest level of local travel advisory. This means that everyday movement and activities in the area may be restricted due to hazardous conditions, and these areas should be noted or avoided.

county orange is under look, means a situation that threatens public safety. Only essential travel, such as commuting or emergencies, is recommended. This is also the time for businesses, schools, government agencies, and other organizations to implement emergency action plans.

county Red is under warning, which is the highest level of local travel advisory. This means that travel may be restricted to emergency management personnel only. Under this advisory, the following are required:

  • refrain from all travel
  • Compliance with necessary emergency measures
  • Collaborate with civil servants and disaster service forces in the execution of contingency plans
  • Follow lawful directions of properly identified officers.

As of 7 p.m. Thursday, Indiana counties with advisories are:

look (orange): Laporte

Advisory (yellow): Elkhart, Lagrange, Marshall

Meanwhile, the Indiana Toll Road has issued a winter weather ban for certain heavy vehicles. From Thursday, December 22, 5:00 PM (4:00 PM CST) to Sunday, December 25, 12:00 AM (Saturday, December 24, 11:00 PM CST).

At the Michigan state line, you can find information about closures, snowplow locations, and other road conditions on MDOT’s MiDrive website.

A local travel advisory has been issued for St. Joseph County, Michigan. Valid from 4pm Thursday 22nd December to 1pm Saturday 24th DecemberThis means that all non-essential traffic is asked to stay off the roadway and you should not move unless absolutely necessary.
