Flight cancellations affect travel plans for RHS Marching Band

Rockford, Michigan — After almost a year and a half in the making, the Rockford High School Marching Band is now days away from the trip of a lifetime. 2023 Rose Parade in Pasadena, California.

But now massive flight cancellations One of three flights was canceled following a recent winter storm, affecting the band’s travel plans. On Tuesday, more than 60% of his flights from Southwest Airlines were canceled, and the airline warned that it would operate just over a third of his normal schedule over the next few days.

By comparison, cancellation rates for American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and JetBlue Airways are None to 2% by Tuesday.

Rockford High School band director Brian Phillips said Thursday, Dec. 29, that the band will be bussing Chicago’s Midway and O’Hare airports on three separate flights.

Phillips said both of the band’s Midway flights were booked via the Southwest, and one of them has been cancelled. Another one is still on schedule.

Phillips says he is currently working closely with a travel agency to make arrangements to bring the band to California.

He said, “I’m sure our tour coordinators will find a solution. They’ve had to deal with issues like this in the past with other bands and they have the students’ best interests in mind.” I did.”

This is not the first time Rockford’s band program has performed on the national stage. In 2017, the band Macy’s Thanksgiving Day ParadeAdditionally, 2022 marked their fifth consecutive state title through the Michigan Competitive Bands Association.

The nationally televised 5.5-mile Rose Parade begins at 11am. Monday, January 2nd.

Rockford will be the 28th of 80 groups selected to appear in the parade.
