CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – After buying gifts and booking travel, getting scammed out of your money this holiday season is the last thing you want.

Danny Karon said, “Sadly, a lot of people are naughty and not nice during the holidays. Don’t let that happen.”

Karon, a Cleveland attorney, shared tips on how to fend off scams while traveling this time of year.

His first tip may surprise you, but he tells you not to use public phone charging stations.

“When you connect to an unknown device in a coffee shop, drug store, or on the street, your smartphone can be infected with malware. This is called juice-jacking,” said Karon.

Karon recommends bringing a portable charger with you if you travel. That way you don’t have to connect to a charging station.

“Who knows what you put in and take out of your phone when you think it’s just turned on…if your laptop has a worse connection than your phone? Even laptops,” Karon said.

Another thing to watch out for this holiday season is home rental scams. Make sure you are renting from a reputable site.

“I’ve heard from people who hooked up to these crazy sites, but nothing on the other side… There’s nothing worse than having your family show up with you and they stay nowhere.” ” said Karon.

Don’t let thieves steal your joy while on vacation.
