Flight cancellations top 1,400 on Christmas morning

Atlanta (CNN) — Flight cancellations, delays and other transportation problems are piling up on Christmas Day as much of the United States is still reeling from nearly a week of winter storms.

More than 1,400 flights to and from the United States were canceled by 9:30 a.m. Sunday, according to flight tracking website FlightAware. . Christmas Day is traditionally a bright day for passenger flights.

It was the southern airport as the sun rose over the East Coast. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) is the world’s busiest airport for passengers and has been at the forefront of cancellations and delays. The rest of the top five have traditionally been in colder climates.

Tough week for flying

The arrival of a major storm was ill-timed for travelers as flights over the Christmas week began to return to pre-pandemic levels.

A total of 3,487 flights were canceled on Christmas Eve, according to FlightAware. Friday was his worst day with 5,934 cancellations, while Thursday had about 2,700 cancellations.

Across the eastern two-thirds of the country, the monstrous winter weather is expected to ease slowly until Monday. As of 8:20 AM ET, there were 83 cancellations on Monday.

Amtrak’s last service alert was posted on Friday. He later said that due to bad weather, “Amtrak has had several services and cancellations between now and Sunday, December 25.”
