Funviralpark Cajon Pass, California (VVNG.com) — A thick layer of fog covered Cajon Pass on Friday, causing poor visibility, which is expected to continue into Saturday evening, as strong winds began.
A strong wind advisory is in effect from late Saturday morning through Saturday evening, according to the National Weather Service.
According to the Agency’s site, the Victor Valley area experiences south to southwest winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts of 50 to 60 mph.
Wind gusts of up to 75 mph can occur on the desert slopes and desert foothills of the San Bernardino County Mountains, including the Apple Valley and Lucerne Valley.
“While the strongest winds are expected near the desert slopes, mountain wave activity could push strong winds across the desert floor,” the forecast said, adding that “it could blow away trees and power lines.” It can cause potentially harmful winds.”
The advisory warns that wind, as well as rain and fog, can pose a hazard to travel on New Year’s Eve, making travel difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles.
Snow is expected to begin in the high altitudes above 7000 feet, but may snow in lower areas after midnight and freeze roads above 6000 feet.
Caltrans also issued an Emergency Road Closure Notice from 12:00 noon Saturday, December 31 through 6:00 am Sunday, January 1 due to possible rain and flooding.
The following closures will be across the construction zone on 15 Freeway and are subject to change in days and times due to weather changes.
Northbound and Southbound Lane 1 of Interstate 15 will be closed from Oak Hill Road to Bear Valley Road.
Caltrans suggests that commuters use State Route 138 in Ferran to get to State Route 18 and take a detour back onto Interstate 15 to avoid delays.
“Be careful and remember to slow down when approaching or passing construction areas,” Caltrans reminded.
