In Peoria, many anxiously waited for their families. They probably sat on the tarmac for nearly an hour.

“My flight was delayed,” said Christine Bollwinkle, one of the many people waiting for her family at the airport.

Hundreds of bags were left behind at Midway Airport in Chicago.

Southwest Airlines, one of the major airlines departing from Midway, canceled 68% of its flights, creating a domino effect for layovers heading to Peoria.

“Our flight from Chicago was delayed about an hour. We finally got on the plane and had to sit on it for about 30 minutes until the ice melted, and then sat on the tarmac for about an hour when we landed.”

Others have driven over an hour to the airport on slippery roads to escape Old Winter’s wrath.
