Erie, Niagara, Genesee, and Orleans counties remain on a travel ban on Saturday, with high winds and snowstorms obscuring drivers’ visibility and making travel virtually impossible.

Authorities are urging the public not to travel to areas where travel bans are in place. The situation outside is life threatening and emergency vehicles are stuck on the road.

“Don’t drive unless you’re a blizzard emergency responder. It’s as easy as that,” Erie County Chief Executive Mark Polonkers said on Twitter Saturday morning.

The thruway remains closed to all traffic from Exit 46 to the Pennsylvania border. All I-190 and I-290 were also closed.

A countywide driving ban has been in effect since Friday morning and Friday afternoon. Sections of the highway in some areas were closed to non-essential drivers early Friday morning as officials prepared for significant icing.
