More than 800,000 people across the United States lost power on Christmas Eve morning after a brutal winter storm that affected most of the country over the past week, according to a 5:30 a.m. report from PowerOutage.

The blackout spread across the country, affecting nine regions, but approximately 417,430 blackouts were recorded in the New England area.

The website shows that 248,482 of these outages occurred in Maine alone, more than 25% of the 849,004 electricity customers tracked in the state.

The area with the next largest disruption was the Mid-Atlantic with about 225,952.

Power outages were seen as life threatening as officials expected freezing temperatures in many parts of America this weekend.

On a positive note, the number of homes without power in southern states dropped dramatically on Saturday, with about 116,722 people without power at 5:30 a.m. Saturday across 12 states.

Georgia, which alone reported more than 100,000 people without power on Friday, saw the biggest improvement, with only about 11,000 people still waiting for electricity in the state.

The Tennessee Valley Authority, the nation’s largest utility, ended rolling blackouts Friday afternoon but continued to urge homeowners and businesses to conserve electricity.
