Tua Tagovailoa showed ‘no visible signs’ of concussion vs. Packers, says NFL medical chief Allen Sills

Tua Tagovailoa entered NFL concussion protocol Monday, a day after he played against the Green Bay Packers with a head injury.

This incident raises two important questions. Why was Tagovailoa’s injury not identified during the match? Should he continue playing this season after multiple head injuries? The NFL and NFLPA’s top doctors answered both questions on Tuesday.

The NFL’s chief medical officer, Dr. Allen Sills, told NFL Network that the NFL’s concussion protocol against the Miami Dolphins quarterback should not have been triggered starting Sunday’s game. It will only trigger if you hit a , then show signs of injury. According to Sills, Tagovailoa showed no symptoms during the match.

“What our spotters and independent neurologists are looking for is a blow that transfers force to the head or neck area, followed by that damaging behavior,” Sills said. There are many blows to the head that occur in…

“Despite being in contact with medical staff during the match, there was a blow to the head and no visible signs despite the player reporting no symptoms. There was nothing that triggered the moment.”

Sills said anyone involved with the game, including injured players, teammates, coaches and officials, can flag symptomatic behavior. No one flagged it.

Dr. Tom Mayer, chief medical advisor for the NFL Players Association, told USA Today on Tuesday that the NFLPA reviewed footage and reports from an unrelated neurotrauma consultant for the NFL at Sunday’s game and said nothing was missed. He said he was checking to see if

“We’re going in a logical order to review and see what’s out there,” Mayer said.

This is the play widely believed to be responsible for Tagovailoa’s final entry into the protocol.

The back of the head bounces off the grass, Similar to Week 3 Injuries We saw Tagovailoa in a supporting role against the Buffalo Bills. He came back to finish that game and the next week against the Cincinnati Bengals. After another blow to his head, he ended that game in the hospital as he had to leave the field on a stretcher.

Should Tagovailoa play again?

That leads to the question: Should Tagovailoa face the Patriots in Week 17, or play for the rest of the season at all? Instead, he was hospitalized in week 4. If a protocol has failed before, who can say that it will fail again, even if it has since been revised?

Several former NFL players, including Robert Griffin III, Booger McFarland and Charles Woodson, said Monday that the risks were too great and Tagovailoa should not play again in 2022. If you have.

Sill on Tuesday pointed to a protocol requiring Tagovailoa to go through a multi-step process with the team and an independent neurologist before being approved by the Dolphins. Acknowledging the inability to make accurate predictions, he declined to recommend Tagobairoa.

“And what I’m trying to say is that in any case of this nature, the team will act in a very conservative way.” However, today’s technology does not yet allow us to really estimate future injury risk.

“So what we have to do is make sure that the athletes have fully recovered and that their voice and autonomy are respected in the decision-making process.”

Mayer, on the other hand, suggested that it was too early to call about Tagovailoa’s condition after Week 17.

“But I totally understand the logic people are saying, ‘He should be out for the rest of the year,'” Mayer said. “Some would say he should retire. That’s the whole range of options.”

“It’s like Chapter 24. We’re working on Chapter 1 right now. So we move through the chapters logically and advise players who ultimately make decisions.”

The Dolphins, medical staff and Tagovailoa have four days to decide their next steps before Sunday’s game against the New England Patriots. They will do so in competing interests of the Dolphins’ playoff fortunes and Tagovailoa’s health.
