Trey Lance has second ankle surgery, expected back for 49ers OTAs

Quarterback Trey Lance underwent surgery to remove hardware inserted into his right ankle in the first surgery in September, the 49ers announced Saturday.

Lance has fully recovered from Friday’s procedure and is expected to return to organized team activity next offseason.

The placement of the hardware was near Lance’s ankle tendon due to the location of the fracture Lance suffered during the Week 2 game against the Seattle Seahawks. According to the team, during his rehab, it was discovered that the proximity of the tendon caused inflammation in his ankle.

After consulting with multiple experts, “it was decided to remove the hardware to prevent future ankle problems,” the team said.

The 3rd overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Lance entered the season as the starting quarterback for the 49ers. Before his injury, he completed 15 of 31 passes for 194 yards, one interception and no touchdowns.

Jimmy Garoppolo took over as quarterback for 10 games before a broken leg sidelined him for the rest of the season. Now, the 49ers’ championship season is in the hands of rookie Brock Purdy, a final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.

There’s a lot to speculate about the 49ers’ future at quarterback. This offseason will undoubtedly be a hot topic, especially if Purdy continues to play well, but for now, the 49ers are on track with Lance fully recovered and Purdy deep in his run in the playoffs. I would like to use offensive weapons properly.
