‘Top Gun’ to ‘Avatar’, these are the highest-grossing movies of 2022

Avatar: Path of Water hit over $1 billion in ticket sales in just two weeks.

James Cameron’s blockbuster, the sequel to the highest-grossing movie of all time, followed Jurassic World: Dominion to ten-figure earnings this year. End of time in theater.

Avatar’s performance means 2022 ends with three films crossing the $1 billion threshold at the box office.

That’s a far cry from 2019’s last full box office haul, pre-pandemic, which grossed $9 billion, but it’s still ahead of 2020 and 2020, when one movie grossed over $1 billion each. and is still increasing from 2021.

While some industry watchers had predicted domestic box office grosses of over $8 billion or $9 billion, another title from Tom Cruise, the highly anticipated Mission: Impossible Dead Calculates.

BoxOffice.com Editorial Director Daniel Loría said: “I think that’s why we ended up with disappointing numbers in ticket sales.”

While there is 40% less movie content in theaters this year than in 2019, industry watchers still find hope in cinematic experiences.

“What we do know is that there are still cultural moments of going to the movies for a unique cinematic experience,” Loría tells Make It. There are fewer and fewer titles coming.”
