Thousands of Christmas Eve Flights in US Canceled, Delayed in Storms

Flight delays and cancellations continued to spike Saturday, leaving travelers stranded on vacation as winter storms swept through the United States.

As a result, as of Saturday afternoon, airlines had canceled about 3,000 flights in the US and delayed more than 6,000 more, according to flight-tracking site FlightAware.

The extreme situation means travelers are unsure if they will be able to reach their destinations in time for Christmas as delays increase nationwide.

Atlanta, Denver and Seattle airports currently have the most cancellations, according to FlightAware.

According to 11Alive News, passengers at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport were stranded for hours as airlines repeatedly delayed or canceled flights.

Vacationer Christopher Fulton told 11Alive to “stay positive” after experiencing a string of delays in Atlanta on his way home to Florida.

“Several flights have been canceled since I sat here,” Fulton told the station. ”

According to insider Jake Epstein, this week the National Weather Service warned Americans of snowstorms, freezing temperatures and high winds.

The storm will continue to hit parts of the Midwest and East over the New Year weekend with blizzard conditions, heavy snow and flooding along the northeastern coast, according to CNN.

CNN reported that Christmas Eve in Washington DC, Chicago and New York was predicted to be the coldest in decades. Record low temperatures are also expected in Miami, Orlando, and Atlanta on Christmas Day.

Winter storms caused nearly 6,000 flight cancellations and more than 11,000 delays in the U.S. on Friday, with Seattle, Chicago, Denver and New York City claiming the most cancellations, according to FlightAware data. .
