We’ve been hearing warnings for days: Blizzard conditions hitting parts of Michigan today and Saturday will make driving in some areas nearly impossible and extremely dangerous. Little or no snowstorms, drifting snow, and sudden drops in temperature.

Meteorologists from the National Weather Service at the Grand Rapids office have examined a long list of hazardous travel impacts expected starting today. They’ve also compiled a list of the Michigan highways that are expected to see the worst in the next few days.

  • US 41 in the western upper peninsula
  • M-28, East-West Corridor across the Upper Peninsula
  • US 31 runs along Michigan’s West Lakeshore region
  • US 131 runs through the heart of Michigan
  • Take I-196 West from Grand Rapids to Holland
  • Near Kalamazoo/West I-94

Blizzard conditions are expected to continue through Saturday, and frigid temperatures are expected to continue into early next week. Lake-effect snow is expected to continue through Sunday in areas near Lake Michigan and Lake Superior.

Dangerous travel conditions will continue through Saturday, according to the NWS. Here are some trip highlights shared by meteorologists:

  • Travel may not be possible, especially near the coast of Lake Superior and Michigan
  • Drifts can have a particularly large impact on these major roads
  • If travel is essential, we recommend packing emergency items to ensure your safety
  • Realize that if you get stuck, help may not be immediately available

If you’re out in the Michigan winter, pack your essentials in your car.
