It’s likely that the Arkansas Razorbacks can be removed from that stereotype this year.
First and foremost, the teams that have built their reputations are long-standing national title or bust teams like Alabama, Georgia, Florida and LSU.
Arkansas may be a little underperforming in the regular season, but they never really felt let down heading into the postseason in the 2014 Alabama vs. Oklahoma Sugar Bowl game.
A lot has been done about the transfer portal and the final week of the season, but it couldn’t be better when it comes to getting the most out of this team in the Liberty Bowl.
Last check was less than 50 players, but almost everyone is trying to impress someone. Everyone who touches the field, including NFL scouts, WWE, coaches, moms, old girlfriends, and more, are in the game.
Having no players that require time and focus allowed for deeper, more personal relationships and coaching. Young players who previously received little attention are now in hands-on jobs, as if their growth was the only thing standing between the Arkansas state and the national championships.
But what struck me most was the change in attitude on this team.
As Raheim “Rocket” Sanders said in a player interview, the Liberty Bowl isn’t the end of the season. It’s a new start for the 2023 season.
Energy was the keyword for all players who spoke.
real energy.
.Meeting energy.
Locker room energy.
Energy from the field all at once.
Even the talk in the media of no restrooms or hot showers was about how she seemed to have lost weight from this team.
Something’s gone in the locker room that everyone threw down.
Practice was cold.
Admittedly, there were some issues related to the bowl game.
Granted, these guys lost close friends to the NFL draft and transfer portal as well.
But none of that seems to matter at this point. These players have walked through the darkness of Locker Room Gun and emerged on the other side with renewed vigor and, for the time being, a culture reminiscent of when Pitman first arrived.
The relief that “we got through a rough patch” blows through this squad like the fresh cool air of spring when it’s warm enough to open the windows.
This may be the Super Bowl for Kansas, but it could be the first step to a brighter future for every player on this team.
The Jayhawks may only be missing six players, but only 22 will be on the field.
And it’s much easier to do without all the weight that’s no longer on everyone’s backs.
