Southwest Airlines flight cancellations leave Christmas travelers stranded at Love Field

There are many frustrated travelers at Dallas Love Field and Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport on Monday.

Many people trying to get home from vacation trips have a hard time getting home as bad weather has caused many flights to be canceled and crews to be displaced.

“When everything gets out of hand, it’s hectic and crazy and everyone is frustrated and angry with each other,” said stranded passenger Sarah Bryant.

The Bryant family was about to fly to Cancun on Spirit Airlines. After checking their luggage and going through security, their flight was cancelled.

And they are not alone.

“We are trying to find out where the plane came from, but we have no answers,” said Randy Roemfeld.

Michelle Roemfeld said, “So I guess I can go home. This was our kid’s Christmas present.

Airlines said the majority of the nationwide cancellations were due to the effects of the massive winter storms that have affected major cities from the Pacific Northwest to the East Coast, causing flights to land and planes to crash. The crew is not in place.

Southwest Airlines was particularly hard hit.

According to flight tracking website FlightAware, 2,747 Southwest flights were canceled as of 4:30 p.m. on Monday. This is 67% of the total number of flights for the day.

Love Field has canceled 290 flights and delayed 67 flights.

In the past two days, Dallas-based Southwest Airlines has canceled more flights than any other airline in the country.

On Sunday, Southwest Airlines canceled 20% of flights from Love Field.

In the previous two days, Friday and Saturday, Southwest Airlines canceled about 30% of its flights.

Many passengers spent the night at the airport hoping that the day would get better.

FOX 4’s cameras spotted piles of people and luggage in the terminal overnight.

Susan Bryant said, “Everything is important until we get there, so we’re going to make the best of this situation.”

At Love Field, passengers waited in line for about two hours to speak to someone at the Southwest Airlines ticket counter.

“I got here and found out at the kiosk that it had been cancelled. Why didn’t you let me know before I was dropped off at this airport?” said Linda Burns.

The queues at Southwest’s baggage claim counters have gotten even longer.

“They are doing their best here, but four hours is a little too long.”

People said it felt like a scavenger hunt trying to find a package among the masses.

“The bags arrived safely, but not my son. But luckily I came and was able to find them,” Garrett Hinsley said.

FOX 4 spoke with one woman who is returning to Southern California after traveling to Florida.

She was about to catch an 11pm flight that was already delayed.

“Suddenly people started saying flights were canceled. Flights were canceled and people said, I was honestly worried about riots. I saw six or seven people crying.” I was so worried… I mean, I’m going home… to the kids for Christmas,” said Priscilla Wright.

Edmund Kincaid and his two children were sleeping in the terminal last night trying to catch a flight to San Antonio. Now he has given up.

Linda Burns was scheduled to fly from Orlando to Love Field, but her flight was canceled on Christmas Eve.

Rather than wait a few days for her next flight home, she decided to rent a car.

“So we’re here now to pick up our packages and go home.”

The president of the union representing Southwest Airlines’ flight attendants today denounced the airline.

Lynn Montgomery says airlines have failed to modernize their technology.

Southwest Arlines said it is trying to rebook passengers as soon as possible.

According to Southwest, those whose flights have been canceled can either request a full refund or receive flight credits that do not expire.
