Southwest Airlines cancels most flights to and from PHX Sky Harbor

PHOENIX — Hundreds of flights have been canceled at Phoenix Sky Harbor as travelers try to return from vacation trips.

As of 1:00 p.m. Monday, Phoenix Airport: 200 canceled flights and 66 Flight delay.

Most of the canceled flights were by Southwest Airlines, which said on Sunday it was having problems due to persistent weather across the country.

At the airport, Southwest officials informed disgruntled passengers that 90% of flights had been canceled, with no flights from Phoenix Sky Harbor for several days.

A Southwest Airlines official released the following statement on Monday:

With days of extreme winter weather across our network, the ongoing challenges are impacting our customers and employees in unacceptable and significant ways.

And sincere apologies for this are just the beginning.

We are on the front lines of safety, rebalancing our airlines and redeploying our crews and aircraft to address the massive disruptions urgently and will eventually travel with us. We are committed to providing the best possible service to all of our customers.

Southwest Airlines is the largest airline in 23 of the top 25 travel markets in the United States, and when severe weather hit the entire continent, we were fully staffed and ready for the looming holiday weekend. This safety-first work is intentional, ongoing, and necessary to get back to normal reliability with minimal last-minute inconvenience. As the holiday season nears next year, further changes are expected at the level of already reduced flights. On Sunday, ABC15 spoke with a frustrated traveler.

Gabriella Flareau and her family tried to get to Tennessee from Palm Springs, California, but her flight was cancelled.

“I don’t fly much. “This is a little frustrating, but that’s it. We’ll just wait and see what happens.”

Some people didn’t want to wait to see what would happen. Alma Schmucker decided to rent a car to get to her destination. She made her layover in Phoenix heading from California to Texas, but her flights kept getting cancelled.

“My daughter is very angry. She says with my grandchildren, ‘Mom, I’m waiting for you to open presents,’ and I say I’m so sorry, this is unpredictable.” It’s the weather,” Schmucker said.
