Pennsylvania police chief killed in shooting; suspected gunman shot dead in shootout hours later

A Pennsylvania police chief was shot dead Monday and a suspect shot dead in a shootout with police, officials said.

Brackenridge Police Chief Justin McIntyre was killed and another officer was injured, officials said. The injured officer was shot in the leg and was hospitalized in a stable condition.

Authorities were looking for Aaron Lamont Swann, 28, of Duquesne in connection with the shooting, Allegheny County Police Superintendent Christopher Kearns told reporters. was

He was considered armed and dangerous.

At 2 p.m., officers found Swann, who was wanted for a probation violation involving the use of a firearm, and pursued him on foot. At 4:15 p.m., Brackenridge police officers spotted Swann in his 800 block on Third Avenue, followed by another chase, Kearns said.

Two shootings occurred several blocks away during the chase, and two officers were shot. Kearns said McIntyre was hit in the head.

After the shooting, Swann allegedly carjacked a car.

While riding in the stolen car, Swann encountered a Pittsburgh police detective who tried to pull him over. The car followed.

While fleeing the crash site, he allegedly opened fire on an officer who returned fire. Swann was beaten to death at the scene, police said. Investigators recovered two different handguns from him, according to Allegheny County Police.

Authorities say an investigation will be launched into all three shootings, including the one that killed Swann.

Pennsylvania gubernatorial candidate Josh Shaprio called McIntyre’s death “a devastating reminder of the courage of those who risk their lives every day to protect us.”

“Police Chief Justin McIntyre ran into danger to keep Pennsylvanians safe. He made the ultimate sacrifice in serving his community,” he tweeted.

Democratic Senator-elect John Fetterman also shared his thoughts on the deadly shooting.

“This is absolutely tragic,” he tweeted. “Chief McIntyre has made the ultimate sacrifice to keep our community safe.”

A small borough of Allegheny County, Brackenridge is located 22 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. Fox News Digital has contacted the police.
