Sandusky County, Ohio (WTVG) – At least one person was killed and many injured after 50 vehicles collided along the Ohio Turnpike, the Ohio Highway Patrol told 13abc.

Multiple vehicle crashes along the turnpike occurred early Friday afternoon in Sandusky County.

The Troopers said there were multiple collisions in the eastbound lane of the Ohio Turnpike between State Route 53 and US Route 4 in Erie County that emergency officials responded to. The road will be closed in both directions, with eastbound traffic diverted to exit 91 and westbound traffic diverted to exit 118.

Buses are transporting people stranded on the turnpike to the Castalia Maintenance Building, according to the PIO of the Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission. A video obtained by 13abc shows first responders getting people out of their cars.

An OSHP spokesperson told 13abc that the first of many crashes occurred near State Route 2 around 11:45 am. Shortly thereafter, at around 12:30 pm, multiple cars collided, creating a large pile.

An OSHP spokesperson told 13abc, “This will continue for some time.” “There are many troopers and first responders working on this.”

Toledo’s Fire and Rescue Authority said the crew had requested assistance with rescue resources.

Troopers say visibility is an issue on turnpikes when the wind is blowing. The crash occurred during frigid temperatures and high winds, leaving Sandusky County in a Level 3 snow emergency late Friday afternoon.
