No. 12 Washington defeated No. 20 Texas, 27-20, in the Alamo Bowl for its first 11-win season since 2016.

The Huskies weren’t bothered by Longhorns for the majority of the game. UW led by 17 points early in the fourth quarter thanks to a TD pass from Michael Pennix Jr. to Jalen McMillan. Texas cut their lead to 7 with 1:40 remaining and got the ball back with a potential game-winning TD and 2-point conversion chance with 31 seconds remaining. However, a drive in the final ditch with no timeouts remaining did not get a first down.

The win means Washington will finish the season 11-2 in Karen DeVore’s first season as head coach. I ended up with a loss. Hiring DeVore from Fresno State University, the former Indiana offensive coordinator quickly acquired former Indiana QB Pennix as a transfer.

The move paid off as the Pennix were one of the most productive passers in the country in 2022 and the Huskies won seven more games than they did preseason. Washington has made more progress than any other team at the top level of football in 2022, and he is well positioned to be a Pac-12 contender next season.

The Penix will be back in 2023 as the Pac-12 boasts one of the strongest quarterback groups in college football. Come back with Kam Ward. Oregon State will land his QB DJ Wiagalerai of Clemson, his former Notre Dame QB Drew Pine will move to Arizona State, and his QB Colin Schley of Kent State will move to his UCLA .

Texas, on the other hand, finished the season with an 8-5 record. The Longhorns entered the game without turning away Bijan Robinson and Roshon Johnson, among other transfers and opting out of the NFL Draft, allowing players like freshman Jonathan Brooks to get playing time. Brooks scored his two TDs.

The Alamo Bowl may also have been the last Texas game before Arch Manning. QB Quinn Ewers never had a terrible game — his stats would look a lot better if it weren’t for a third-quarter back-to-back drop by star receiver Xavier Worthy — but the Longhorns have Manning’s presence. The highest-profile QB tournament in spring and summer college football, thanks to

Manning signed with Texas in early December and is expected to be an early registrant. This could give him a chance to practice this spring and start as a true freshman, or with the Longhorns if Ewers plays as well as he occasionally shined in his 2022. is very likely to retain the starting position for his second season.
