LAS VEGAS – San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance underwent surgery on his right ankle for the first time in nearly three months.

The Niners announced Saturday that Lance had surgery Friday to remove hardware causing inflammation in his ankle.

Lance was injured on September 18th against the Seattle Seahawks. He underwent surgery the next day to repair what the team called a “fractured fibula and ligament damage” in his ankle.

The latest surgery is the result of lingering problems from that first procedure, the team said in a statement.

“Due to the location of the fracture, the placement of the required hardware was near the tendons in Lance’s ankle,” the statement read. After consulting with multiple experts, it was decided to remove the hardware to prevent future ankle problems.”

According to the 49ers, Lance will continue his rehabilitation and is expected to make a full recovery in time for organized team activities in the spring.

The 11-4 Niners have third-time starting quarterback rookie Brock Purdy heading to Sunday’s meeting with the Las Vegas Raiders. Lance’s replacement, Jimmy Garoppolo, is recovering from a broken left leg.
