It may not be a full-fledged joint NFL-NFL Players Association review. However, the NFLPA is investigating the latest circumstances in which Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa suffered a concussion.

The union will investigate the incident, according to sources with knowledge of the situation. It’s standard protocol to do so, the sources explained.

That said, the NFLPA will very likely see enough during its own review to call for a full-fledged joint investigation with the NFL. A joint investigation was carried out after Tagovailoa could not be ruled out after his head hit the turf and he showed signs of marked motor instability. As part of the review, the union exercised its authority to terminate the independent neurotrauma consultants involved in the evaluation.

Against the Packers on Sunday, Tua’s head hit the turf late in the second quarter. He was not tested for concussion at the time. On Monday, he was placed on concussion protocol.

Tagovailoa’s performance declined after hitting his head on the turf. He ended up throwing three interceptions in the fourth quarter.

Concussion or not, this is at least the second time Tua has participated in the protocol this year.

Tua will have to go through five steps in the return-to-play protocol before being cleared to play again this year. The Dolphins close out the season with a trip to New England and a visit from the Jets. Earlier this year, the NFL said the median number of days it takes for a player to be cleared to return is nine days.
