update: Kickoff for Saturday’s game at Nissan Stadium has been delayed by an hour and is now scheduled for 1pm (CT).

As extreme cold weather continues to hit central Tennessee, Nashville Mayor John Cooper has called for the Tennessee Titans to postpone the kickoff of Saturday’s game against the Houston Texans.

The Titans (7-7) will host the Houston Texans (1-12-1) from Nissan Stadium on Saturday (noon, CBS). Three hours before his scheduled kickoff time, the Titans are attempting to thaw the ground by tarping the playing surface and using gas-powered blowers to blow hot air onto the field. The sidelines and near the end zones are littered with ice, but most of the visible part of the field appears to have melted.

The Titans have not commented on the mayor’s statement at this time. Cooper Administration spokesperson TJ Ducklo said the mayor would not immediately comment on his request other than the tweet.

The Tennessee Valley Authority has instructed local power companies to “reduce their load” and plans to intermittently interrupt power supply due to high demand due to continued freezing temperatures in the area. At the time of publication of this document, Nissan Stadium’s “feeling temperature” is -1 degree.

This is one of the coldest games in the history of Nissan Stadium. The previous record for the actual lowest temperature at kickoff in Nashville was 23 degrees, and the lowest, taking into account wind chill, was 14 degrees.
