Star shortstop Carlos Correa’s surgically repaired right foot is a concern again, this time for the Mets.

Earlier this week, the San Francisco Giants said Correa’s physical problems were the main reason why a large contract offer for the shortstop failed.

Now, Correa’s 12-year, $315 million deal could be imminent, according to a report by Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

If the Mets continue to make reservations about the long-term health of Correa’s right foot, a restricted contract could be considered.

Billionaire team owner Steve Cohen made waves this offseason by aggressively signing big players to bolster the Mets’ roster for next season. Cohen has spoken publicly about Correa’s deal, but things could get complicated if the team tries to pull out of the deal.

MLB generally does not want team executives or officials to comment on pending agreements.

Correa’s prospects in the free agent market may not look too promising given that two big league clubs have revealed concerns about his physical health.

The new twist is the latest in a story that has shocked baseball. Earlier this week, Correa and his agent, Scott Boras, turned course when they decided to pivot from his 13-year, $350 million deal with the Giants and sign another deal with the Mets. It has changed.

One of the Mets’ options is to add language to the contract to accommodate games Correa may miss due to foot problems. Correa’s remarks, however, are likely to push back any such changes.

Over the past two seasons, Correa has been mostly available. He appeared in 132 of the Astros’ 162 regular-season games last year.

MLB teams typically finalize contracts the day after a player’s medical examination is performed, unless a problem is discovered.

The 28-year-old underwent arthroscopic surgery to repair her fractured right fibula. Correa has never been on her injured list with her foot injury.

Last March, the Twins medically cleared a three-year, $105.3 million free agency deal with Correa. His two-time All-Star selection opted out of his contract at the start of the offseason.

It is not at all uncommon for team medical personnel to offer different interpretations of a player’s medical records. This practice is similar to a doctor giving a second opinion on a player’s initial prognosis.
