The chaotic winter storms currently raging through the country have caused massive storm surges in coastal areas of New York, forcing many families to evacuate their homes just two days before Christmas.

Video shows the effects of rising tides that submerged some vehicles and flooded townhomes in Rockaway and other areas of South Queens.

Paramedics and firefighters were on the scene, helping trapped residents and carrying children on their shoulders to keep them out of harm’s way.

Dozens of vehicles were stranded during storm surges in Howard Beach, Queens and parts of Long Island, but no injuries have been reported so far.

Massive flooding in areas of Queens led to numerous evacuations as a brutal winter storm hit parts of New York and the coast on Thursday night.

Some major highways in New York and New Jersey have been closed due to flooding and fallen trees. The closures are consistent with commercial vehicle bans in place in parts of both states.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency ahead of the storm’s arrival.

At Rockaway, video footage shows a neighbor being rescued from a first-floor window and moved to higher ground as the water reached waist-deep and submerged his car.

There was also a last-minute appearance of running out of the house with a duffel bag.

In Howard Beach and neighboring New Jersey, emergency vehicles are seen wading through inches of flooding as trains were delayed up to 30 minutes from the Hoboken terminal due to high water levels.

Massive coastal flooding also occurred in areas of Maine and Massachusetts as a deadly storm reached the East Coast on Thursday night.

In addition to severe flooding, the storm brought a dramatic cold front on Friday afternoon.

Temperatures are expected to drop to the 30s in the afternoon, dropping into the 10s and into the single digits on Saturday.

Elsewhere in the country, storms are already proving to be a lethal threat, with car deaths reported earlier this week in Kansas, Oklahoma and Oregon.

Strong winds of up to 35 miles per hour are also expected to bring potentially life-threatening temperatures and wind chills of minus 30 degrees, along with already frightening weather.

About 10,000 US flights were delayed and more than 3,000 were canceled on Friday alone.
