Iowa LB Jack Campbell’s grandfather dies in accident before bowl

Iowa star linebacker Jack Campbell’s grandfather died Friday night in Nashville while he was watching the Hawkeyes play at the Music City Bowl.

Campbell’s stepmother Jen’s father, William Smith Jr., died following a pedestrian-vehicle accident involving one car, the school said in a statement. A 76-year-old man was pronounced dead after being taken to Vanderbilt Medical Center.

Campbell’s parents chose not to tell him about the accident until after Iowa’s 21-0 win over Kentucky on Saturday. Playing in his last college game, Campbell had a team-high ten tackles, including two losses and one sack.

“Our hearts are with Jack and his entire family as they mourn the tragic passing of their grandfather and father, William Smith Jr.,” coach Kirk Ferencz said in a statement. We know he was a strong influence on his grandson and a loyal supporter of Hawkeye football.All of us, players, coaches and staff, think of the Campbell family during this very difficult time. , keep praying.”

Campbell was the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and a finalist for the Buttocks Award for the country’s top linebacker.
