BANGOR, Maine (WABI) – A powerful low pressure system cuts west today and is on the warmer side of the storm, issuing the first weather warnings for the entire state. Being on the warmer side of the system, expect mostly rain. Temperatures in the Bangor region and north are below freezing this morning, with some of the precipitation starting as a snow mixture that quickly turns to rain for the rest of the day. Northwestern Maine, especially in the mountains, can see 3 to 6 inches of snow cover before it turns completely rainy by noon. Precipitation started early this morning and won’t abate until tonight. Southerly winds bring in warm air, bringing highs in the high 40s and low 50s for the day. Total rainfall appears to be in the range of 1 to 3 inches, combined with snowmelt, and snow-covered drainage canals can lead to road flooding. In addition to flooding, strong winds of 50-60 mph inland and 60-70 mph along the coast are expected. This can cause trees and power lines to fall, and be prepared for widespread power outages. Strong wind warnings have been issued for the entire state, and flood watches and warnings have been issued inland and along the coastline. Light rain is possible behind this front as cold air moves in behind the system late tonight through tomorrow morning.

Strong Wind Warnings, Flood Watches/Warnings, and Coastal Flood Warnings have been issued statewide.(Wabi)

One to three inches of rain is expected across the state with very gusty winds, 50 to 60 mph inland and up to 70 mph along the coast.(Wabi)

By Saturday morning it will be dry as the storm leaves the area. Behind the storm we see gusts of wind that bring cold air behind the system. Cold air behind the system can freeze rainwater left on the road. It could make your Saturday morning trip smoother. Highs will drop into the 20s on Christmas Eve and Christmas, with nighttime lows in the 10s, but the cool and dry conditions will continue into next week.

As we head into the holidays, we clean up and cool down significantly.
