Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is back on the NFL’s concussion protocol the day after his loss to the Green Bay Packers, head coach Mike McDaniel confirmed Monday. New England Patriots in Week 17 His position on the all-important AFC East matchup against the Reds is officially in question.

McDaniel added that he did not know when Tagovailoa had the concussion and that no one complained of symptoms during the match.

“It was him meeting with a doctor today to discuss some symptoms,” McDaniel said. told reporters on Monday.

This development is important for two reasons. For one thing, the Dolphins are very much in the AFC playoff hunt despite losing to the Packers, but need to win at least one of their next two games to qualify for the postseason. Miami lost three games early in the season when Tagovailoa missed time with a concussion.

Now on to the next point on physical health for Tagaviailoa. Tagovailoa looked like he had a concussion in his Week 3 game against the Bills against Buffalo, but returned in the second half from what was described as his back injury. Tagovailoa suffered another head injury a few days later when he was taken off the field by ambulance on Thursday night against the Cincinnati Bengals. He said he didn’t remember.

Those two instances sparked weeks of questions and investigations about the team’s concussion handling before Tagovailoa’s eventual return in Week 7 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Especially after McDaniel said no one warned him during the game that Tagovailoa may have been injured. This is notable because the NFL Players Association has fired the independent doctor who cleared Tagaviailoa’s return to play in Week 3.

Aside from the concussion debate, the news could also affect the AFC playoff race.

If Tagovailoa can’t play, the Dolphins will likely go back to Teddy Bridgewater against the Patriots and/or Jets. McDaniel already said Bridgewater Practice will get the first-team snap while Tagovailoa is in protocol, but added that it’s “too early to really tell” who will start in Week 17. finished and lost all three matches.

The Patriots, Jets and Los Angeles Chargers are the three teams that will benefit most from the increased Dolphins losses, with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Las Vegas Raiders also eyeing the postseason.
