D.C. forecast: Cold Christmas Day with warmer temperatures on the way

A somewhat subjective assessment of the day’s weather on a scale of 0 to 10.

4/10: I dream of a warm Christmas. The weather is sunny and unseasonably cold.

  • today: Mostly sunny with little wind. Highs: Late 20’s to his late 30’s.

It’s not a white Christmas, but after the coldest Christmas Eve day in DC on record, Santa is gifting us a taste of Arctic weather as the sting remains today. On the plus side, it’s a few degrees warmer than yesterday and not as windy. Temperatures will gradually rise as a high pressure system snakes overhead, and the weather pattern is fairly mild over the next week.

Today (Christmas Day): We have plenty of sunshine in our holiday plans today. It’s still quite cold, with morning temperatures rising into the teens and twenties, and afternoon highs in the late twenties and early thirties. But it’s a few degrees warmer than yesterday and a little less windy. Tomorrow (Monday): A mostly clear morning sky gives way to increasing clouds in the afternoon as the low-pressure upper region approaches. Daytime highs are in the late to mid-30s and tend to be a little warmer.Still below average, but ingested after a few days of blistering cold. Can’t rule out a few snowfalls by evening, especially west of DC. Confidence: medium to high

tomorrow night: Overnight lows tend to be higher as well, especially west of DC, only dropping into the 20s.Confidence: Moderate

Tuesday and Wednesday Mostly sunny with a slight breeze. Temperatures continue to rise in stages, with Tuesday highs in his late 30s to his late 40s and Wednesday highs in his mid 40s. Tuesday night lows are in the 20s.Confidence: Medium to High

Temperatures could whip out at the end of the week and next weekend, with highs likely reaching 50 degrees by Thursday or Friday, and possibly 60 degrees next weekend.
