The heartwarming story behind Franklin Food Market opening on Christmas Day

Sioux Falls, South Dakota (Dakota News Now) – Christmas is one of the happiest times of the year for some, but it can be a struggle for others.

“For others, it’s the loneliest time of the year because there’s no one around,” said Franklin Food Market Manager Laurie Van Noort.

About 15 years ago, Van Noort found out that some of his staff didn’t want to be alone on Christmas and offered them the option to come to work.

“And if enough people apply to help, we open our doors for a few hours on Christmas Day,” says Van Noort.

Owner Ted Haggar was surprised at how busy they were.

“Laurie brought me some food, and I thought we’d have a little dinner here and there. Nobody even had time to look at it,” Haggar said.

The Franklin Food Market is open from 8am to 2pm on Christmas Day. Shoppers love the idea too. Van Noort remembers the man from Brookings who forgot he was hosting a holiday meal.

He panicked, but we helped him. I wasn’t sure what I needed, so I made sure I had everything I needed,” says Van Noort.

Some people look for exquisite items.

“We bring alligators, rabbits and all sorts of things,” says Haggar.

About 20 couples, including owner Haggar and his wife Glenda, met and married while working and shopping at the store.

“We are the fifth generation of Haggar working here,” Haggar said.

Some shoppers have another reason to stop by on Christmas Day.
