WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) – The new church in Hanover County held its bi-monthly Food Giveaway on Carolina Beach Road on Thursday, but it was a little different than usual.
From coats to pants to shoes, 20 brand new clothing items were donated by Walmart and made available to anyone in need.
Lighthouse Shining Ministries hosts a Food Pantry on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month, making fresh produce, meats, and canned goods available to everyone.
Reverend Rico Hopson has been hosting food pantry giveaways since Hurricane Florence, but the need continues to grow.
“I know a lot of people here are going through really difficult times,” he said. “We live by the sea. We have big houses and beach houses, but there are many of the most disadvantaged people in this area.”
Mike Prude and his wife Julie have been stopping by the church for food for the past six months.
“With Social Security, food prices go up, but our prices (income) stay the same,” Mike said. “Yes, this is very helpful.”
The church still has plenty of adult and children’s clothing, shoes, and a separate giveaway Friday from 11am-4pm at 6622 Carolina Beach Road in Wilmington.
Registration is not required. Items will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
