A dangerous winter storm moving across the country has disrupted holiday travel from the air to the train station as cancellations and delays surge over the Christmas weekend.
As of Friday morning, many airlines, Amtrak train services and bus services were reporting changes or cancellations across the country due to inclement weather. At least four deaths in vehicle crashes are also linked to winter storm Elliott as road conditions worsen across the country.
The Kansas Highway Patrol responded to three fatalities on Wednesday that police said may have been weather-related, according to KAKE News. Two more fatal crashes were reported by patrol personnel.There was also one fatality due to icy roads in Oregon on Tuesday.
On Friday alone, more than 717 flights in and out of the United States were delayed and more than 2,981 were canceled, according to a 5:20 a.m. report from flight tracking website FlightAware.
Airports with the most cancellations were New York’s LaGuardia (181), Michigan’s Detroit Metro (157) and Washington’s Seattle-Tacoma (155).

Amtrak, the nation’s largest passenger train service, said Thursday afternoon that more than 20 routes, mostly in the Midwest, were canceled through Sunday morning due to winter weather. Some routes in the Midwest and Northeast are delayed for the same reason.
The company has posted the following statement on its website along with the route cancellations and changes:
“Due to severe winter weather, Amtrak is making several service changes and cancellations from now through December 25. These measures are being taken out of an abundance of caution and with state transportation departments, host railroads and emergency services. This is done in consultation with administrators and weather forecasters.”
Amtrak said affected customers can call 1-800-USA-RAIL to change their reservations. The company added that the additional charges will be waived for any bookings changed during the changed schedule period.

Bus operations are also weather dependent. Greyhound issued a warning Thursday that customers traveling to and from the Midwest may experience delays or cancellations over the next two days.
Affected cities include Charleston (West Virginia), Chicago, Dallas, Danville (Illinois), Davenport (Iowa), Denver, Detroit, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Minneapolis, St. Louis and Wichita (Kansas). I have.
