Let’s face it, playing some of the country’s most historic courses, such as Cypress Point, The Country Club and Merrion, is out of reach for most people. But that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to play a course associated with golf’s history.
The most read travel story of 2022 was a guide to three historic (and fun) courses you can play for under $50.
The first was at Galen Hall Golf Club, about an hour from Philadelphia. The course claims to have the oldest island green in golf and he has nine holes laid out by AW Tillinghast.
The Hotchkiss School Golf Course in Connecticut has a 9-hole Seth Rayner design that you can play for just $16.
And Marion Golf Course in Massachusetts is the oldest original design of George C. Thomas, designer of West Coast classics such as Riviera, Los Angeles Country Club and Bel Air.
All three are one of the few public access courses by three architects, and you can learn more about their historical significance by reading the full text here.
