For Southwest Airlines and its customers, the travel nightmare seems to be easing.

On Thursday, 2,300 Southwest flights nationwide were canceled, including 197 flights in Dallas Love Field alone. It’s an improvement.

On December 29, 2022, the Mercer family traveled safely from Baltimore to Dallas on Southwest Airlines.

The flight out of Baltimore was one of the few flights not canceled on Thursday. The Mercer family was pleasantly surprised to land safely in Dallas.

“I glanced around the web and saw everything else and it was perfect,” said Lydell Mercer.

“We had no issues with baggage or delays,” Crystal Mercer said.

Luggage reunion will continue for a while

Meanwhile, some passengers and suitcases are still stuck. Pedestrians and strollers sit freely on the love fields.

Eduardo Sanchez and his wife drove from New Mexico to Texas when their parents were stranded in Houston. My connecting flight to Albuquerque was canceled 7 days before.

The family stopped in Dallas on the way back to Albuquerque after being told their luggage was at Love Field.

Kyle Heath’s 11-year-old found a bag Southwest left in Denver.

“Three quarters of our plans were without bags,” said Heath. “They called me at 6 this morning and said, ‘The package is here.’ Here it is, yay!”

North Texas couple share kind gifts

And in controlled chaos, an act of kindness.

Marilyn Lawson said, “The Southwest is in dire straits and our customers are in a worse situation, so we thought we could help them get through it by providing them with snacks and magazines.

David and Marilyn Lawson of North Richland Hills were flying nowhere, handing out small gifts in suitcases.

“They are so happy, shocked and so grateful,” said David Lawson. “I have an entire library of books here so they can choose their own. We ask them to pass it on to someone else.”

NBC 5 watched the Lawson family hand out blankets and hugs to apparently upset travelers who had been on the phone with the airline for hours.

Southwest Airlines canceled only 39 flights on Friday. We essentially promise to get back to our normal schedules for the busy New Year’s Eve travel weekend.

At Thursday’s off-camera briefing, Southwest Airlines management again apologized for the problem, but said it had redeployed more than 100 different aircraft and crews for nearly all of Friday’s schedule.
