Several roads in St. Lawrence County were closed in addition to the southwestern town’s travel ban which has been extended to 8am.
The travel bans in Madrid, Waddington, Lisbon, Oswegatchie, De Peyster, Macomb, Hammond and Rossy are driven by the number of drivers involved in snowstorms, poor visibility and stranded or crashed.
The travel advisory applies countywide until 8pm on Sunday.
The sheriff’s office said, “You should not travel unless your employer requires it for work or an emergency.
Route 37 is closed between the Jefferson County Line in the town of Hammond and the Ford Street Extension in Ogdensburg.
Drivers heading east with Ogdensburg as their destination will be allowed to proceed to Ogdensburg with extreme caution.
Route 68 is closed between the town of Canton and Ogdensburg.
Route 12 is closed in St. Lawrence County.
Weather forecasts show large amounts of lake-influenced snow across much of St. Lawrence County, with visibility down to near zero in many places, sheriffs report.
The sheriff’s office and state police are investigating numerous car crashes, some involving piles of multiple cars. Many vehicles are disabled on the roadside and drivers are stranded. Emergency responders are in the process of finding and rescuing stranded motorists.
