Northwest winds reducing visibility across state, making travel difficult

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – Travel across Iowa remains difficult. Northwest wind continues to strengthen. Blowing snow and poor visibility. Travel is not recommended on many roads in Iowa as the cold and wind continue to pick up.

The Iowa DOT warns drivers that the roads are so smooth that the cold doesn’t help the salt. Don’t forget to bring your winter survival kit if you need to go out.

Wind

The worst winds will be seen on Friday. This is when gusts can exceed 50 mph. Occasional blizzards and snow drifts with near-zero visibility will be seen through Saturday morning. When snow crosses cold roads, black ice develops and can cause very smooth spots and stretches.

Freezing temperatures are expected to continue through Saturday morning. Northwesterly winds will bring dangerously cold temperatures of -20 to -40 degrees. You can get frostbite in less than 15 minutes in this cold weather, so dress appropriately. Cover any exposed skin, especially your ears and nose, and limit your time outdoors if possible.

what you can do

If you have travel plans until Saturday morning, you should consider another scenario. It can look difficult and dangerous. Postpone your trip if possible. If you have to hit the road, make sure you have a winter weather kit in your car, as you could be stuck in the worst of storms for a while.

If there is cold air and the wind chill stays below freezing for many days, bring proper winter clothing to protect yourself from frostbite. Hats, gloves, scarves, and heavy coats are required at this time of year.

Bring a winter survival kit in your car if you need to travel. Includes:

• Full tank of gas

• Jumper cables or jump packs

• Mobile phone charger

• First aid kit

• Flashlight with battery

• Thermal blanket

• Bottled water and non-perishable snacks

Shovel, ice scraper, snow brush

• Emergency flare

Traction litter or cat litter

• Coats, hats, scarves and boots for all travelers
