Minneapolis (FOX 9) – A busy travel day was complicated for post-holiday flyers Monday, as thousands of flights were canceled nationwide, including dozens at Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport. Paul International Airport.
As of Monday afternoon, 79 flights had been canceled from MSP and 158 were delayed, according to FlightAware tracker. Most of the cancellations are from the Southwest, with over 2,700 cancellations, representing over 60% of flights.
In MSP, Delta leads with 38 canceled flights, while Southwest isn’t far behind with 29 cancelled. By contrast, Delta’s cancellations amounted to 11% of flights on his MSP, with 29 canceled flights representing 80% of Southwest’s scheduled flights.
The FOX 9 crew spoke with several people affected by the cancellation. One group going to Denver was told by Southwest they couldn’t rebook until Friday.The group is now considering renting a car and driving back.
Denver appears to be the hardest-hit airport, with more than 420 flights canceled, nearly all of them (383 flights) by Southwest Airlines.
In a Twitter message, Southwest Airlines warned flyers that its customer support phone system was overwhelmed as the Winter Storm Elliott ripple effect continued to cause problems.
Southwest’s latest post reads, “Continued challenges are severely impacting our customers and employees due to continued extreme winter weather across our network. “We are working on the front lines of safety, rebalancing our airlines, redeploying our crews and equipment to ultimately ensure the best for everyone who plans to travel with us.” We are urgently addressing large-scale disruptions by providing services.”
