Winter storm warning begins on Monday, continues Tuesday; Heavy snow and ice for some areas

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s North American Mesoscale (NAM) forecast model shows potential precipitation patterns from Monday morning through Tuesday evening.

The heaviest snow will occur Monday afternoon and Tuesday evening through Tuesday. South Central and Southeast Minnesota and parts of western Wisconsin could experience several hours of freezing rain before switching to the winter mixture, followed by all snow.

Some computer models show about an inch of precipitation in many areas Monday through Tuesday night. This includes rainfall and snow moisture content. This would be more than the total average rainfall for the entire month of January.

Expected snowfall

Southwestern Minnesota will see the most snowfall, with many areas expecting double-digit snowfall over the next two days. Central Minnesota, northern metropolitan areas, and northwestern Wisconsin will see more than 6 inches of total snow cover.

Parts of southern Minnesota and southwestern Wisconsin are most likely to accumulate ice from freezing rain.
