Attorney General Letitia James said her office will “investigate” truth-challenged Congressman George Santos, even though James received cash from his 2022 opponent.
The newly-elected Republican congressman faces a growing barrage of criticism after admitting to fabricating key parts of his personal and professional resume. He is under investigation by the Nassau County Republican District Attorney and federal prosecutors.
James, a Democrat who was reelected to statewide office this year, received $1,000 from Ze Creative Communications in December 2020, records show. The company is owned by Democratic communications expert Robert Zimmerman, whom Santos won in his November midterm elections on Long Island.
“It sounds like a conflict of interest to me,” said former Staten Island legislator Robert Stranière.
“In my opinion [James] It’s very partisan,” added Straniere. “She did her best to beat Andrew Cuomo… expected herself to be a formidable candidate for governor.”
James and Zimmerman’s close relationship continued in the 2022 race. James was nominated in October as a “special guest” When Zimmerman opened a campaign office in Plainview, LI Zimmerman also marched with James at the Memorial Day Parade in Little Neck Douglaston, posed for a friendly photo with her, and later posted on his Facebook page. uploaded to the page.
Critics of James said the closeness between the two justified her immediate refusal from any investigation into Santos.
“She should step aside and decline herself,” said former Republican mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa. “Tish, I think you refused the debate when you ran for Attorney General, but you were the only one who did. And now that you’re in the limelight, I want to jump into this one. It’s the first time she’s jumped into a name other than Trump.
A rep for James did not respond to the Post’s request for comment.
