French serial killer Charles “The Serpent” Sobhraj​, released from prison in Nepal, says “I feel great”

Nepal, Kathmandu — Confessed French serial killer Charles Sobraj He was released from a Nepalese prison on Friday after serving time on charges of killing a backpacker in the United States and Canada.

His nickname “The Serpent” derives from his reputation as an artist of disguise and escape.

The country’s Supreme Court ordered the release of 78-year-old Sobraj, who was sentenced to life in prison in Nepal on Wednesday Because he was in poor health, well-behaved and had already served most of his sentence. Nepal’s life sentence is 20 years for him.

He has already served more than 75% of his sentence, is eligible for release, and has a heart condition, according to court documents.

The order also said he must leave the country within 15 days.

Agence France-Presse reports that Sobhraj was taken to an immigration detention center and then taken to Kathmandu airport to be deported to France.

“I feel very good … I have a lot of work to do. I have to sue many people, including the government of Nepal,” he told AFP on the plane before takeoff.

The AFP reporter then saw his plane take off.

The French have admitted to killing several Western tourists in the past and are believed to have killed at least 20 in Afghanistan, India, Thailand, Turkey, Nepal, Iran and Hong Kong in the 1970s. However, his 2004 conviction in Nepal was the first time he had been convicted in court.

Sobraj was detained in New Delhi’s high-security Tihar prison for 20 years on suspicion of theft before being deported to France without charge in 1997. He resurfaced in Kathmandu in his September 2003.

Sobhraj is the subject of the 2021 Netflix series The Serpent, inspired by the 1970s serial killer starring Tahar Rahim and Jenna Coleman.
