Flyers at Kings: Tippett is terrific as Flyers wrap up 2022 with win over Kings

The Flyers ended 2022 on a solid note.

On Saturday, they defeated the Los Angeles Kings, 4-2. The winning streak has been since November 5-8.

It was never easy. Ahead of today’s game, the Kings have gone 7-1-2 in their last 10 games. Only the Golden Knights have a better record in the Pacific division.

Samuel Elson has started three straight games for the Flyers, going 2-1.

Penalty period

Officials made their presence known early on in this. In his first 20 minutes, five penalties were called, four against the Flyers.

Two were very questionable. Let’s break it all down.

First, the Kings went to their first power play of the day as Kevin Fiala tripped over Cam York. Less than 10 seconds later, Travis Koneckney was called out for tripping Alex Iafaro. Both Koneckny and head coach John Tortorella were clearly shaken by the decision.

The Kings had a two-man advantage and showed a penalty kill for the very aggressive Flyers in the first minute. However, if you keep two players down for too long, they will eventually catch up. Adrian Kempe found the back of the net, but that was all the Kings got on the power play.

Shortly after the Flyers returned to even strength, Karl Grandstrom left for Philadelphia’s first power play as he was called for interference. Scott Lawton took advantage and scored his third power play goal of the season. This is his one of the power plays the Flyers have made in recent weeks.

But wait.

Joel Faraby was called for slashing, and just three seconds after being killed, Nick Sheeler was called for stumbling.

The Flyers felt like they couldn’t settle down, but they were able to end the period with just a goal.

stick tap for tippet

Over the past five games, Owen Tippett has found his groove. He scored the only goal in the second period in what can best be described as a goalscorer’s goal.

He has now scored in two games in a row, with four goals in his last five games. In Season 11, he only trails Konekny in goals for the team.

While his contributions are acknowledged offensively, it’s important to note his performance defensively as well. This is his game full of Tippett’s 200 feet and one of his best outs this season.

This consistent version of the tippet is exactly what Flyers can use.

Noah Cates Relief

It was a rocky stretch for Cates, who had not scored a goal since November 15 against the Blue Jackets.

The 23-year-old closed a 20-game goal deficit against the Kings and scored his first NHL shorthanded goal of his career.

It was an unconventional shot from the top of the zone, but it shows what happens when you put the puck into the net.

New Year’s resolution?

of course.

When you take a step back to assess your team’s status, there are good things and bad things. What can we expect in 2023?

  • I can’t say enough good things about how Connectny plays.

He has become a consistent producer this season. This is what the team desperately needed. Averaging more than one point per game, he is the Flyers’ top scorer with 18 goals.

A career best of 24 goals in a season. He achieved this record in his three consecutive seasons in 2017-18, 2018-19 and 2019-20.

He now has 18 goals in 31 appearances and all signs point to him finally surpassing 24 goals. He could realistically end the season with over 30 goals.

  • Defend York with a big club.

York has been a sizeable addition to the Flyers’ blue line since being recalled from the Phantoms on December 8.

Given his speed and skill set, there is no reason to bring him back to the AHL affiliate team. Today’s matchup against the Kings marked his 40th career NHL game (10 this season, 30 in the 2021-22 season). He collected an assist on Laughton’s power play goal.

  • This may be just a wish, but the power play has to improve at some point, right?

Having a man advantage shouldn’t *this* be brutal to watch on a daily basis. increase.

And when you’re at the bottom (or penultimate), you can only hope to rise from here. please.
