On Monday, the Miami Dolphins announced that quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has been placed on the NFL’s concussion protocol.

The news immediately raised concerns for Dolphins quarterback Tagovailoa’s health after he was hospitalized in September for his second head injury in two games. Several former NFL players working in the media urged the league, the Dolphins and Tagovailoa on Monday to make sure he doesn’t play again this season.

Former NFL quarterbacks Steve Young and Robert Griffin III discussed the subject with former defensive tackle Booger McFarland on ESPN’s “Monday Night Countdown.” Griffin and McFarland directly asked Tagovailoa to shut it down, but all urged more attention to head injuries in the NFL.

“If the NFL is serious about health, safety and concussions, Tua Tagovailoa shouldn’t be playing any more this season,” McFarland said.

Griffin, who saw his career hampered after playing with an injury in a playoff game, urged the NFL to prioritize Tagovailoa over Tagovailoa.

“It’s no joke when you talk about these head injuries,” Griffin said. But I’m more worried about Tua and his longevity.

“He should not play for the rest of the season.”

Griffin repeated his opinion on social media.

Young did not explicitly call on Tagovailoa to end the season. But while acknowledging the medical challenges associated with assessing brain damage, he called for more NFL safeguards.

“The final frontier in medicine is the brain,” said Young. … “We players don’t understand or have insight into how much risk is involved in our heads. We don’t know and medicine really tells us We can’t… day we risk something we can’t appreciate.

“So Tua will be back there….I realize how difficult this is for the NFL and how dangerous it is. If we’re going to get serious about it, I’d like someone to come back before the game.” You must be able to test the

A San Francisco 49ers Hall of Fame quarterback, Young retired in 2000 after multiple concussions left the specter of permanent brain damage. Since then, he has frequently advocated for better treatment and awareness of brain injuries in football.

Meanwhile, former Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Emmanuel Acho joined Griffin and McFarland in calling for Tagovailoa to end the season. while talking in FS1.

“I have to stop Tua for the season,” Acho said. “Periods. No conversations, no arguments, no second thoughts. We have to shut him down for the season. …

“I’m sorry, but it’s better to be safe. The dolphins have already said sorry once this year.”

In “Sorry,” Acho referenced Miami’s Week 4 game against the Cincinnati Bengals, leaving the game on a stretcher in a horrifying scene that ended with Tagovailoa at the Dolphins’ quarterback in the hospital. A second head injury was the cause. one week before, He endured what the Dolphins first rated as a head injury against the Buffalo Bills before he was allowed to come back and finish the game. The NFLPA eventually fired the doctors involved in Tagovailoa’s return, after which the league updated its concussion protocol.

That raises concerns for the Dolphins quarterback, who apparently suffered three head injuries in one NFL season.

Meanwhile, the Dolphins are in the middle of the AFC playoff race with the remaining games against the New England Patriots and New York Jets that will determine the postseason standings. As of Monday, Tagovailoa’s status against New England on Sunday is unknown.

If Tagovailoa is deemed healthy, the pressure to play will be high. But his long-term health concerns may eventually outweigh that.
