Shortly after Ronaldo’s abrupt departure from United, Al Nasr emerged as his strongest suitor. From a competitive point of view, the move represents a setback for Ronaldo, who has played in his top European league for the past two decades. He could return to the highest level once his contract with Al Nasr expires, but by then he will be over 40 and already showing signs of physical decline.

Assuming Ronaldo doesn’t return to top-tier European football, he’ll end his career with four UEFA Champions League titles, seven domestic league titles and five Ballon d’Or awards. He has achieved everything that should be achieved at club level. But for a player who has always been compared to Lionel Messi, the timing of the signing could be seen as Ronaldo stepping out of the best race of his generation.
