According to a new USDA report, retail food prices rose 8.9% in the first seven months of this year. This rate of increase is higher than at the same time last year and at the same time in 2020. So far in 2022, all 13 food categories in the USDA report have seen faster price increases compared to historical average price increases for the same period last year and through July. Over the first seven months of 2022, prices across all food categories increased by at least 4%.

Prices in three food categories rose by more than 10%. Eggs were up 21%, oils and fats were up 13%, and chicken was up 12%. Inflationary pressures vary by category. For example, egg and poultry prices are now much higher than historical averages due to the outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza. In his first seven months of the year, fresh vegetables had the lowest increase of all categories.
