Los Angeles City Councilman Monica Rodriguez hosted an annual food stamp at the Hansen Dam Recreation Center on Friday, Dec. 30, to help 500 families facing food insecurity in the San Fernando Valley.

Partnering with local nonprofit North Valley Caring Services, Rodriguez focused on families in need in City Council District 7, providing grocery boxes with dry goods, fresh produce and chicken to families. Did.

According to the 2020 U.S. Census, District 7 is 67% Latino, 14% of residents have limited English, and nearly 18% live below the poverty level. The Rodriguez neighborhood of the northeastern San Fernando Valley includes the communities of Sylmar, Mission Hills, Pacoima, Sunland-Tujunga, Lake View Terrace, Shadow Hills, La Tuna Canyon, and some of the North Hills communities.

Most food banks close the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day, so many low-income families in Los Angeles live quietly, but can face food shortages and other pressing needs.

North Valley Caring Services Pantry is the largest food distribution site based in the northeastern San Fernando Valley, serving 33,000 households in more than 100 Southern California zip codes in 2020.
