Makawao (HawaiiNewsNow) – Food trucks in Makawao have been closed due to a cockroach infestation, the state health department said Saturday.

Inspectors said Thai Mee Up Kula 2 received a red placard and failed to address the break-in.

Food trucks cannot reopen until the violation is resolved, officials said.

During Thursday’s health inspection, inspectors observed about 25 roaches of various life stages throughout the mobile, according to the DOH.

They found roaches on shelves above service windows, under frying pans, in takeaway food containers, and on the floor.

Additional serious violations identified during the inspection include:

  • A large number of droppings were observed on the dish towels on the shelf above the service window.
  • An accumulation of grease and food debris was observed throughout the cockroach food mobile.
  • No screens or other means to prevent entry of flies or other pests were installed, and the mobile entrance door was observed to be left open during inspection.
  • And the lack of proper temperature control in the food preparation area.

The food truck will remain closed until all violations are resolved and corrective action is taken.

A follow-up examination is scheduled for December 28.
